Must stop the consideration of the race factor in college admissions
We must oppose to Senate Constitutional Amendment 5 (SCA5) which has been approved by California Senate, since nobody should be judged according to race in college admissions. SCA5 is discriminatory and barbaric! Please urge your California Assembly Member and all California Asian American Assembly Members to VOTE NO or ABSTAIN from voting on it. Attached are a sample letter and the contact information of Asian American Assembly Members.
If passed, SCA5 would give rise to racial discrimination. Asian Americans and Caucasian Americans would have to score much higher than students of other ethnic groups do in an attempt to enter University of California (UC). The number of Asian American students entering UC would drop significantly.
As opposed to employment, there are already many objective evaluation standards for college admissions including high school GPAs, SAT and ACT scores, etc. The race factor or affirmative action should not be considered. Equality should mean that nobody is favored or degraded due to race.
Nobody can decide on his/her own gender and race before birth. Why should he/she be evaluated based on race after growing up? There should be no compromise.
There are also many disadvantaged or poor families among Asian Americans. The current system already gives preference to students who reflect family hardship through the college application essays.
Moreover, students entering a good UC school mainly due to the race factor have a low graduation rate. Thus, it is not just unfair, it is wasting our limited public resources. Both U.S. Federal Court and California Supreme Court have ruled that Proposition 209 which forbids the consideration of the race factor in college admissions does not violate the Constitution and should be upheld.
Suffice it to say, we strongly urge everybody to demand your legislators to VOTE NO or ABSTAIN from voting on SCA5.
